Popular country rankings
Start with population, the economy and quality of life.
Population
Mid-year estimate of the resident population.
217 · Countries and territories ↗GDP (nominal)
GDP expressed in current US dollars. Both exchange-rate movements and price changes are reflected in the value.
186 · Countries and territories ↗GDP per capita
GDP in current US dollars divided by population. This measures average economic output, rather than personal income.
186 · Countries and territories ↗Happiness: life evaluation
Average life evaluation in the World Happiness Report 2026. Respondents rate their lives from 0 to 10. The displayed year is the final year of the three-year period: 2025 means 2023–2025. This is not a single-year 2026 survey or the sum of six explanatory factors.
146 · Countries and territories ↗Generative AI usage rate
Microsoft’s AI Economy Institute estimates the proportion of the working-age population using generative AI products. These estimates refer to June 2026 in the second-quarter report. Anonymized telemetry is adjusted for device, market-share and internet differences. It is not a population census, enterprise adoption rate or AI capability ranking.
145 · Countries and territories ↗Number of ARWU top-1,000 universities
Counts universities in the ARWU 2026 top 1,000 by the original country or territory classification. This is a count of listed institutions, not all universities or a measure of teaching quality. Countries absent from the list are not assigned zero.
59 · Countries and territories ↗Human Development Index
UNDP’s HDI combines life expectancy, education and living standards. Higher values indicate higher human development. The 2025 report provides observations through 2023, using one report’s historical series. It does not describe conditions in real time or cover every aspect of inequality or personal safety.
193 · Countries and territories ↗Corruption Perceptions Index
Transparency International’s CPI measures experts’ and businesspeople’s perceptions of public-sector corruption. Zero means highly corrupt and 100 means very clean. It is not the proportion of actual corruption cases or a census of every form of corruption.
181 · Countries and territories ↗Global Innovation Index
WIPO’s Global Innovation Index 2026 combines innovation inputs and outputs. Higher scores indicate stronger innovation performance. The year identifies the report edition; underlying data mainly comes from 2024–2026. Annual methods and data can change, so comparisons across years require the official methodology.
139 · Countries and territories ↗Surface area
Total surface area, including inland waters and some coastal waterways.
213 · Countries and territories ↗Life expectancy
Life expectancy at birth estimated using mortality conditions in the reporting period.
217 · Countries and territories ↗Population density
Population divided by land area; inland waters are excluded from the area denominator.
214 · Countries and territories ↗Browse rankings by topic

How to compare country rankings
Read the indicator definition
Total GDP measures economic size. GDP per capita is an average, not personal income. Population and population density answer different questions.
Explore total GDP rankings ↗Compare the same statistical year
Each ranking uses one year or report edition. The default is the newest year reaching 70% of the maximum available country coverage. Public data can be delayed or revised.
Read the methodology and sources ↗Rank does not mean overall performance
Peace scores and intentional homicide rates rank from lowest to highest; other indicators rank from highest to lowest. Equal original values share a rank. Higher values are not always better.
